Green grass on the feild

Here we are ready to flip the calendar to February, aka the middle of winter.  So far we have had very little snow and some very mild temperatures.  Unless you own and snowmobile or enjoy ice fishing, you are likely very content with our weather in December and January.

As time marches on, remember that February 1st also marks the time where we are potentially only 75-85 days away from planting corn in Ontario.  This means it is time to start thinking about what you want to do for the 2016 cropping year.  Some questions that you may want to ask yourself are:

  • Did I learn from any mistakes I made in the past few years?
  • What can I do to improve my farming practices this year?
  • Have I learned anything by talking or watching other farmers?
  • What useful information have I picked up from what I have read or heard at winter meetings?
  • Do I have a plan to whittle down my “to do” list of jobs that need to be done before spring?
  • Have I made a “to do” list of jobs that need to be done before spring?
  • Are my cropping plans for the upcoming year prepared?
  • Do I need to spent time discussing plans with my crop advisor/consultant?

Take a few minutes to go over these questions with an open mind and make sure you are as prepared for spring as you possibly can be…it can save a bunch of stress and likely add some profit to your bottom line.
