Plan for a poor crop and that is what you will get, No matter what!! Plan for a good crop and you just may get it!!
The spring weather of 2016 has been a fickle one. Very early spring, early hot dry weather, then + 32 temps with strong winds for days on end, extremely early seeding in places, it was looking like we are in for a drought in 2016. Large fires in the north taking out community’s, hot dry weather in the south, some were already planning for the drought of 2016!! With the way it looked it was easy to be convinced we were headed for a hot dry drought in 2016!! Then a week later the temp was dipping down below freezing, we were concerned some of the early seeded crops would freeze!! Heavy snow in some places where lots of seeding was complete!! Now here we are at the end of May, many farmers in some areas can’t even complete seeding because it is just too wet!!! Crazy – Crazy weather!! Wild swings from one extreme to the other!! We just never know.
I am sure the weather will swing back and forth many times throughout the summer. We never know what we will end up with, but in the 35 + years I have been involved in AG, I have maybe seen 2 or 3 years (MAX), that it would pay to cut back on crop inputs and plan for a poor crop!! I have noticed over the years, the guys that would plan for a good crop most often got it!!! The guys that would plan on a poor crop would also most often get it!!
The bottom line is that it always pays to plan on a good crop, you may not always get the large crop you were hoping for but if you plan on a good crop, put the inputs in to get it, you will get the best crop possible!! It will always pay in the long run!! Have a look around at your neighbours and see who has the nice operation, 95 % of the time it will be because they have always planed for a good crop!!
