When was the last time you dug a corn plant or soybean plant in a field to take a look at the roots? They are out of sight and they are quite often out of mind.
Roots are a very critical part of growth and reproductive processes in the plant.
Some of the many functions roots have with in the plant are:
Anything that impairs the growth or function of the roots will negatively affect the growth and yield of the crop. It doesn’t matter if it is a naturally occurring event or a manmade situation. Soil health, soil temperature, soil moisture (too much or not enough), compaction, herbicide injury all affect root and plant health, and yield.
So, the next time you walk into a field to do some crop scouting don’t forget your shovel and don’t forget to look below the ground.
